Many NSW national park campgrounds, accommodation and visitor centres will start to reopen from 1 June but important changes are in place to keep visitors safe.
I don’t do well with heat anymore (well, never have, really) so we didn’t tick off all the walks as we’re known to do. Home to remarkable plants and animals that have evolved since the age of dinosaurs, Gibraltar Range is a special place that forms part of the Strike out on a mountain biking track past huge granite outcroppings that overlook ancient rainforest.

We left late in the afternoon (since it was hot) so didn’t have time (or the inclination) to do a longer loop. Because they’re so close, it makes sense to explore them together.Even though neither national park may wow you with incredible sights, breathtaking rock formations, cliffs or beautiful rainforests, the walks we did were enjoyable and very pleasant with some good lookouts thrown in.The bird life here is terrific, and there are creeks, rockholes and a few waterfalls to enjoy.Gibraltar Range and Washpool are located on both sides of the Gwydir Highway in northern New South Wales.

Though hot, it was peaceful and relaxing, and the bird life in the morning was terrific. If you’re already at the picnic area, it’s probably worth checking out. Enjoy guided tours, walks, waterfalls, scenic drives, and accommodation surrounded by ancient landscapes.Gibraltar Range National Park is always open but may have to close at times due to poor weather, road damage, or high fire danger.$8 per vehicle per day. It’s not particularly pretty rainforest but we could hear lots of whip birds along the way.We probably spent a good half hour scrambling around the creek bed at the end, exploring the cascades and the old remnants of the weir.
