He was famous for his strenuous and inspired white knuckle New Years Eve organ concerts at Grace Cathedral in SF, and his blazing productions of Bach's works at the Opera House, St. Mary's Cathedral, and other major venues. Bach (1685–1750) held Zelenka in great esteem. Often overshadowed by the monumental B-Minor Mass, J. S. Bach’s four shorter Masses deserve to be better known. Needless to say, this creates some unique challenges for us, like arts organizations everywhere. On a bright Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, the 30-voice California Bach Society, under the direction of Paul Flight, delved once again into forgotten gems from the musical past.
