Christian von Koenigsegg has been called many things, but it would be hard to argue that he isn’t a visionary. But it doesn't have a gearbox in the traditional sense.
It was specifically designed in-house by Koenigsegg to transfer all 1475 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels smoothly and efficiently. At speeds above 30 MPH, the internal combustion engine comes into play thanks to a hydraulic coupling that acts like a clutch, but only slips a tiny bit.
The patent-pending KDD replaces the combustion engine’s traditional transmission – the gearbox as you know it … At lower speeds, the electric motors provide acceleration, with the engine filling in at higher speeds. It's able to withstand more force than any other torque converter in history, according to von Koenigsegg.Why does it need to be so strong? In its place, the KDD provides direct drive to the rear axle from the combustion engine without the need of multitude gears or a variable transmissions, all of which have inherently high energy losses.During highway travel, for example, the KDD reduces drivetrain losses compared to a traditional transmission or CVT by over 50% as there is no step up or step down gear working in series with the final drive – just direct power sent from the engine to the wheels.The Regera has three YASA developed electric motors, which supplement the energy from the combustion engine. Just to review quickly: The engine connects to a "fluid coupling" device, which connects directly to an axle differential.

The electric motors work in conjunction with the engine to provide torque fill, torque vectoring, and help provide power in the gaps where the engine might long for a gear.
