Patrick McKavanagh, P.P. He was a good and persuasive preacher who enlisted the help of many benefactors in raising money for the parish.In 1917 a portion of the church was rebuilt but after a number of years it was found to be too small for the growing congregation.In order to enlarge the Church Father McKay decided to demolish the old house which was at the end of the Church (formerly occupied as a dwelling by the late Father O'Neill). The wall is still standing in most places, and in various states of preservation – the best example of which is the North-East Bastion at Joymount.Not much is known about the area that would become Carrickfergus prior to the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. Residing in Larne, he officiated about 1813 as Parish Priest of Carrickfergus and Larne but only for a short time. He was the first Parish Priest of the newly-constituted parish of Portrush before coming to Carrickfergus. The building was completed the following year at a cost of £500. In Carrickfergus itself however despite the great inconvenience was caused by the destruction of the Church, parish life continued with the weekly Masses, Sacraments, Devotional Exercises and Community Gatherings in the parish community centre. The castle garrison formed a guard of honour as the townspeople applauded his arrival. He had attended St. Nicholas' Boys' Primary School in Carrickfergus, before commencing his secondary education in St. Malachy's College, Belfast in 1946. de Lacy eventually regained his title of Earl of Ulster in 1227, however the castle and its walled town were captured several more times following his death (in 1242) and the town largely destroyed by the Scots in 1402.The Battle of Carrickfergus, part of the 9 year was, took place in and around the town in November 1597.
Carrickfergus . The fortunes of the friars were very dependant on the ruling Monarch of the day and the political climate. Mass was also said to be celebrated in a place on the Commons (Middle Division) called Craig-na-brathair -"The Friar's Rock". He is said to have returned to Ulster in search of an ancient healing well to cure his leprosy – this well could be the one which still exists underneath the castle keep or possibly what would become St Brigit’s (St Bride’s) Well which is located north of the town centre. A professional soldier and natural leader, Arthur Chichester settled the countryside and successfully planted the town with English and lowland Scots. Just two years after his appointment as Parish Priest he was delighted to welcome home Father John McCarroll who had been ordained on June 23rd 1940 in Maynooth. The king’s body is said to have washed ashore and been buried somewhere in nearby Monkstown by the monks.Though even local Council-funded tourist information signage reflects this myth almost as fact, there is no evidence that such an event occurred. In such difficult circumstances Father Michael Cosgrove took up his residence as Parish Priest on May 8th, 1997. In 1963 he returned to the Diocese of Salford. He died of typhus fever in 1817 aged 34 and is interred in Cranfield.Father Daniel McMullan was appointed in 1814 as Parish Priest of Carrickfergus and Larne and Chaplain of the County Gaol. Then on June 14, 1690, King William of Orange stepped ashore at Carrickfergus destined for the Battle of the Boyne, where he defeated his father-in-law James II and claimed the English crown as his own.Carrickfergus as a strategic military base came to the fore once again on February 1, 1760, when Commodore Thurot’s French forces attacked the town. The town is said to take its name from Fergus Mór (Fergus the Great), the legendary king of Dál Riata. Father Cosgrove attended St. Gall's Primary School and St. Thomas Secondary School, Belfast before completing his secondary education at St. Aloysius Secondary School in Cushendall. The priests and people of this ancient parish worked together in faith and hope in the work of rebuilding. It was a source of pride to the people of the parish of Carrickfergus that they had their own Secondary School. The parish must provide the remaining one-third, which is estimated at £400.The Church of St. Nicholas will also require some money to be expended on it in the not too distant future. In May 1315 Edward Bruce, brother of the legendary Scottish king Robert, landed at Olderfleet near Larne and besieged the castle for over a year. In retreat the Scottish soldiers laid waste to the town and countryside of Carrickfergus. General Robert Munro captured the castle and took over the town for the Scots, but between 1648 and 1649 control of the castle would change three times. The original building had a small bailey and an inner ward built by de Courcy. Father Patrick went to St. Nicholas' Boys' School and St. Malachy's College, Belfast. The story is often told that Fergus left Ulster around this time to forge a kingdom in Scotland. In it she relates that her own father went to Mount St. Nicholas (the Chapel School) in 1871. Finding that his usefulness in the parish was much impaired by being debarred from attending the prisoners, he resigned the parish in March 1817.
